The Council has declared four Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) across Belfast in areas of poor air quality. These areas, located along the M1 Motorway and Westlink corridor, Ormeau Road, Upper Newtownards Road and from Cromac Street to Short Strand, are affected by nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution, associated mainly with road transport.

We have recently joined with a range of partner organisations to develop a new 5-year Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) for the city that will address these few remaining NO2 hotspots and improve air quality generally.

The new Air Quality Action Plan draws upon various forms of air quality and transport planning initiatives, including encouraging sustainable transport, improving public transport, providing new transport infrastructure, introducing cleaner vehicle technologies and supporting behavioural change.

Successful implementation of the new Action Plan will improve transportation across the city, promote and enable a shift onto sustainable forms of transport and help to achieve the NO2 health-based objectives by 2022. Where necessary, during the lifetime of the Plan we will also seek to identify and develop measures to reduce concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) across the city.

The Council and our partners are consulting upon the new Air Quality Action Plan over a 12-week period from the 12th May until 3rd August 2021. Please read the draft Air Quality Action Plan or Non-Technical Summary document before completing the survey.
