Consultation has concluded
You can have your say on exciting plans to transform Cathedral Gardens (also known as Buoys Park) into a world class public space for people to gather, relax and play.
Our aim is to create a welcoming space for locals, students and visitors to enjoy all year round, both night and day.
Where is Cathedral Gardens?
Cathedral Gardens is located beside St Anne's Cathedral and Ulster University. Its bounded by York Street and Academy Street.
What are our proposals?
We want to create a unique space that is attractive, sustainable and social.
The key elements in the plans include:
Events space – a home for large scale cultural events, festivals, music and markets
An urban forest – a diverse mix of trees with high canopies, creating forest ‘rooms’
Wildlife and ecology - tree, ground and shrub plantings to attract a variety of local bird species, insects and invertebrates
Play – a space attractive to children was a core consideration. Play features, art and water features and learning sculptures within forest rooms are included while children-focused events will be programmed as part of the wider events in the space.
Belfast Blitz Memorial - a memorial to mark the Belfast Blitz.
Public art - a major artwork and other smaller works to energise the space
Water feature and lighting – the space will feature programmable water and lighting displays, along with audio-visual interactive art above the event space
Accessibility – the space has been designed with accessibility in mind, with Belfast Bikes stations and public transport links nearby
Sustainable urban drainage – rainwater will be stored and reused on lawn areas and for water features.
