Belfast City Council has been working with local councillors, community groups and other public agencies on a regeneration project at Distillery Street. The project, which is funded by the PEACEPLUS programme, seeks to transform what is currently an unused site into a shared space with a natural play area and community zone with formal entrance points, pathways, lighting and upgrades to sections of walls and entrances.
To improve connectivity to the site and the Forth Meadow Community Greenway, the regeneration plan includes proposals for a lockable pedestrian gate. The gate will be opened and closed during certain hours which will be agreed in conjunction with the community.
We want to know what you think of the proposals, and specifically your views on the potential locations for the new gate and initial opening hours. Your feedback will help inform next steps, including a formal planning application.

Next Steps
Community feedback will help inform the planning application that we must submit prior to commencing any work on the site. As part of the formal planning process, residents will have a further opportunity to comment on the redevelopment plan. We envisage work commencing on site in summer 2026 (subject to Planning Permission) with all works completed by Spring 2028. During this time, ongoing dialogue with residents and community leaders will take place to inform the animation activities and potential gate opening arrangements.
The Belfast Local Community Action Plan is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
