Why is planting trees important?
Greenhouse gasses are warming our planet and causing to worrying climate change. Trees can help us fight climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and creating oxygen. Trees also reduce flooding (by absorbing stormwater), decrease wind speeds and cool the air. They create essential habitats for wildlife - bugs, birds, bats and beyond. And they're a source of food for many living creatures, including us!
Being around trees reduces stress levels and tree-planting brings people together.
Who is behind the 1 Million Trees Programme?
Belfast City Council is leading this project but we can only make this happen by working with others and by getting everyone to get involved. The key organisations that are championing and working to deliver this programme are:
This partnership is only the beginning and we have been talking to business organisations, and community and voluntary organisations across the city about getting involved. We'll update on these discussions over the coming months!
How do I get involved?
You can get involved by registering your details on our Belfast Million Trees page. You might be interested in volunteering with our partners the Woodland Trust, National Trust, Conservation Volunteers, and the Belfast Hills Partnership. More information will be added about new opportunities to get involved.
When and where is this happening?
We have a number of sites already selected for tree planting and are working on plans to get started early in 2021. Each year we will assess sites between April and September, with the aim of planting in the tree planting season which is between November and March. We will update with key dates and events as they are agreed.
