Belfast: One Million Trees

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Over the last year, we have been working with partners from organisations across the city to create a process for collective tree planting across Belfast. The idea originated with Belfast Metropolitan Residents Group and has become an ambitious partnership initiative coordinated by Belfast City Council, which aims to make our city greener, cleaner and healthier. Our ambition is to see one million trees planted over a 15-year period.

Why is planting trees important?

We have been been working behind the scenes to coordinate the Belfast One Million Trees programme, identifying potential sites for planting, and building a partnership of statutory agencies and voluntary organisations who can help us make this happen. We are now very excited to be able to launch this programme - check out our short video and stay in touch!

Now, its your chance to get involved. Tell us your ideas and comments or use the mapping tool below to tell us the places where you'd like to see a tree planted. We especially want to hear from businesses and public landowners across the city who would be willing to plant a tree on their land.

Belfast: One million trees map

3 months

We have closed this year’s map and are no longer accepting new submissions.  You can still view the map and see the locations people have suggested as potential sites for our tree planning programme.

New submissions for sites in Belfast will re-open again on 1st September as we begin planning for year 3 of the programme.  In the meantime, you can still get involved and tell us your ideas and thoughts about the Belfast One Million Trees programme by clicking here

A big thank you to everyone who has suggested sites for the next round of tree planting in the Belfast One Million Tree’s Programme. We received a whopping 275 suggested tree locations in the city!

The Belfast One Million Trees Delivery Team will now asses these sites for suitability.  We’ll let everyone that got in touch with us know the outcome of the assessments as soon as we can.   Any approved sites will join our next round of tree planting starting in November.

Further details on the programme will be included in our newsletter to be issued in May so please sign up to stay updated about this exciting project for the city!

CLOSED: We are not accepting any more suggestions at this time. We are currently reviewing all the suggestions received and will re-open the map for new ideas later this year. In the meantime, you can view the locations suggested to date by clicking on the map.
