Consultation has concluded

The new park and sportszone in the Divis are of Belfast is situated adjacent to the Westlink. It stretches from Devonshire Place, near Grosvenor Road to land at the Frank Gillen Centre, near Divis Street. It was opened to the public in July 2021 following a major £1m development, creating an asset for residents in the west of the city.

The area, which had previously experienced a high level of anti-social behaviour has been transformed by the new park which includes new fencing and surfacing, a MUGA, gym equipment, sprint tracks and play equipment. There is also a play area, raised beds, seating and a community garden.

The Department for Communities delivered the project thanks to funding from their Building Successful Communities Programme and transferred ownership to Belfast City Council at the end of June 2021.

To identify some possible names for the park, engagement took place via local meetings with Youth Organisations, Healthy Living Centres, Churches, Community Groups and Sporting Organisations and suggestions were put forward by the groups after they received information around the site and its historical background.

The two names shortlisted are:

  • Divis Back Path – This site has been referred to as “Divis Back Path” and people associate the location with the name.
  • Páirc an Lonnáin (Loney Park) – the site was the location of the old Pound Loney and many people still living in the area are originally from the Loney.

We would like your help to choose which of these names should be selected for the new park. Please complete this very brief survey to pick your favourite.

The results from the survey will be used to select the preferred new name for the park.
