Consultation has concluded

Since 2005 Belfast City Council has been installing alleygates to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and increase feelings of security within communities. Alleygating has been carried out in a phased process and has resulted in almost 1080 gates being installed throughout the city.

Belfast City Council is now in the position to commence a further phase of Alleygates. As part of the legal process for alleygating, we must consult all residents residents and businesses who may be affected by the installation of an alleygate and give them an opportunity to comment on the proposals. If your street is included as part of the Phase 5 alleygates, then you will have received a letter advising you abut the alleygate proposal and inviting you to respond to out alleygate consultation.

It is essential that residents complete the consultation or Belfast City Council will not be able to enact the legislation and will not be able to install gates. The entire legal process is aimed at ensuring support for the scheme, identifying possible problems, identifying suitable solutions and allowing for objections to be raised. All answers you give will be treated in the strictest confidence and in accordance with Data Protection Legislation.

Following the consultation, if there is a decision to erect an alleygate in your area, then we will display notices and advertise the Notice of Intention in the daily and regional papers. If an alleyway is gated all residents who have direct access to that alleyway would be offered a free key. It would then be the residents’ own responsibility to make sure that the gates are open for bin collections and alley cleaning. The key allocation will take place once the legal process is completed, and we are in a position to install gates. You will be notified by post.

Fill in the survey below and let us know what you think about allleygates and if you would like them in your street.
