Avoniel Leisure Consultation

Closes 14 Jan 2018

Opened 28 Nov 2017

Overview

Our £105 million Leisure Transformation Programme is our 10-year investment into improving our leisure centres, programmes and services.  This is a unique opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of our city, by delivering a quality service that meets the needs of our communities.

As part of our  Leisure Transformation Programme we're investing £8 million in the redevelopment of Avoniel Leisure Centre.

This investment is part of a £40 million investment into leisure provision in east Belfast. Work is currently underway on the new £20 million Robinson Centre where the focus will be on aquatics. We have also received £5 million funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards a £17 million restoration and extension of Templemore Baths, where the focus will be on heritage preservation and spa provision alongside increased swimming provision.

Agreed Facilities

Following initial consultation with statutory organisations and advice from a range of industry experts, we have taken the decision that the new centre will focus largely on outdoor leisure provision and will be a sports centre for soccer. In addition, the new centre will have a number of other facilities:

  • One intermediate standard 3G pitch
  • Three covered 3G five-a-side pitches
  • Two outdoor 3G five-a-side pitches
  • One outdoor 3G seven-a-side pitch
  • 240 covered seats
  • Two studios / multi-purpose rooms
  • Two meeting / training rooms
  • Changing facilities for teams, officials and individuals
  • Play service provision
  • On-site car parking

Why We Are Consulting

Based on the agreed facilities we have developed initial designs and we are inviting people, groups and organisations to view our plans and provide feedback on this exciting new development.
