Consultation has concluded

Belfast City Council are consulting on plans for a new crematorium at Roselawn Cemetery.

The existing crematorium opened its doors in 1961 and was designed to handle 700 cremations each year, but with over 3,500 cremations now taking place annually, there is a clear need to provide new facilities.

The proposed new crematorium will include two ceremony rooms and will be able to accommodate around 4,500 cremations per year. It will be a modern facility in which we can provide an improved cremation service to families and mourners.

The new facility will be located within the extended cemetery grounds with ample car parking and a new dedicated road access from the Ballygowan Road.

When the new building is opened, the existing listed crematorium building will no longer function as a crematorium and will be refurbished to provide amenities to the existing Roselawn Cemetery and new crematorium.

Proposed New Crematorium Design

The new crematorium will provide two ceremony rooms each seating up to 200 people. (160 seats on the ground floor and where attendance is high an additional 40 people can be seated in an upstairs mezzanine). The ceremony rooms each have their access car parking, waiting room and generous toilet facilities. They each overlook a landscaped courtyard and mourners exit past the courtyard and through the wreath display area on their way back out to the car park. Provision of two ceremony rooms allows staggering of services and an increase in time between services to minimise overlapping of different groups of mourners.

The crematorium offices, administration staff facilities and the crematory room are centrally located between the two ceremony rooms. A viewing room and changing places toilet facility are also centrally located.

The building uses high quality and timeless materials of buff/ cream brick, timber and polished concrete which combined with large areas of glazing and soft upholstered seating and accent walls creates a warm and welcoming environment for mourners. The new building is being designed to achieve a ‘Very Good’ rating under the BREEAM sustainability assessment method, and will include extensive use of daylight and natural ventilation
