What is Nature Towns and Cities?

Nature Towns and Cities is a coalition of public, private and third sector organisations, committed to bringing nature and green space to urban areas for everyone's benefit. It is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and partnered with the National Trust and Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA)

    What is the project?

Our project – Breaking through barriers to connect people and nature is a capacity building project. We will work with our communities and stakeholders to design a shared Blueprint of how we can make Belfast a nature rich, climate resilient thriving city.

What will the Blueprint look at?

The Blueprint will include, but is not limited to:

    • Identifying how we could manage parks and open spaces to better support biodiversity and climate resilience
    • Explore ways we could “green the grey” in built-up areas

    • Strengthen long-term organisational sustainability by investigating investment opportunities to leave a lasting legacy
    • Assess the data that we use to guide decisions

    What does capacity building mean?

This is the process of supporting the development and strengthening  of skills, knowledge and abilities in communities, organisations and groups to empower them to undertake activities, participate in projects and to become more resilient and self-sufficient. The specific areas that to be developed or strengthened will depend on the need of each group, organisation or community.

Will the project fund the construction of new parks or infrastructure?

No, this is not a capital project
