Language Strategy: Draft Action Plan

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

In April 2018, we launched our new Language Strategy. The Strategy commits to establishing a transparent set of principles for promoting, protecting and enhancing the linguistic diversity of the city. There are five language strands within the strategy:

  • Irish
  • Ulster-Scots
  • New Communities
  • Sign Languages (British Sign Language and Irish Sign Language)
  • Disability Communications

Following engagement with key stakeholders, we developed a new Language Strategy Action Plan to support the implementation of the strategy. The plan is organised on thematic work streams and consists of immediate actions as well as longer-term actions setting out how the Council will deliver its commitments in the Language Strategy. It identifies both immediate priorities and longer- term goals.

The plan covers the following areas of work:

  • Governance
  • Access to Council Services
  • Signage and Branding
  • Community, Education and Business
  • Staff Awareness and Training
  • Engagement

We now want to hear your views on the draft action plan.

This consultation can be filled in in either English or Irish. Respondents are asked to only fill in one version of the survey. You can also send written comments to the Council to The Equality and Diversity Unit, Room 117, City Hall, Belfast BT1 5GS.

This formal consultation will run for a 14 week period and will end on 22 January 2024.
