Overview

We want to hear your views on how we can attract new visitors to Belfast city centre to increase footfall and spend on Sundays, particularly during the spring and summer months.  

Following the fire at Bank Buildings in August 2018, the Council and a range of partners invested in activities to drive footfall back into the city centre and increase spend.  We learned that the only way to do this is to take a wider approach to city centre regeneration by focusing on enhancing the retail offer, improving accessibility into and around the city, increasing the provision of cultural and leisure facilities, creating family spaces, supporting residential areas and enhancing the visitor experience for tourists. 

Following on from this work, we are now developing a ‘Sundays in the City’ programme to help attract new visitors to Belfast city centre on Sundays, especially during spring and summer.  

 

Why We Are Consulting

We want to learn more about your experience of Belfast city centre and hear your views on what you would like to see happen.  We will use this information to develop a ‘Sundays in the City’ programme.

Our rationale for treating Sunday as distinct from other days is that current usage levels and patterns on a Sunday are very different from other days of the week:

  • Cruise ship visitors coming to Belfast increased by 47% in 2019 compared to 2018, with 146 ships in port over a six-month period from April to October.  19% of those ships docked on a Sunday, carried around 46,000 passengers and crew, with most ships in port by 8am.
  • The hospitality sector is keen to plan activities on Sundays to meet demand (e.g. the growing popularity of the “Sunday brunch”).
  • Saturday nights are the busiest in the week for hotels stays.  Occupancy levels are just in excess of 85% (10,000 bed spaces available in Belfast)
  • St George’s Market is one of the only city centre attractions open on Sunday mornings.  Sundays are the busiest day for the Market, particularly from 10am-2pm. 
  • City partners are committed to ensuring that the city centre becomes a more family-friendly place.  Currently, facilities available to families on Sundays are more limited than other days of the week.
