Overview

We’re developing a Masterplan for the Inner North West area of the city centre.  Our aim is to guide the future development of the Inner North West area.

We already consulted on the masterplan and received some interesting, positive and useful feedback.  Partly because of this feedback, we have undertaken further analysis to better understand the potential impact of our masterplan on the environment and our habitats. 

For this consultation, we would like to hear your views on our analysis, whether you agree with our findings or whether you think there are other factors we need to consider.  Copies of all our analysis, and the original draft Inner North West masterplan, can be found at the bottom of this page.

Background information on the Inner North West masterplan

The area covers 42.4 acres and is located in the city centre. It is bounded by:

  • Donegall Street to the north;
  • College Street, Fountain Street/Fountain Lane to the south;
  • Millfield/Carrick Hill to the west; and
  • Royal Avenue to the east.

The masterplan looks at the assets, challenges and opportunities and sets out design principles and character areas which could help improve this part of the city. 

The Belfast Agenda (2017) and the Belfast City Centre Regeneration and Investment Strategy (2015) set out a vision for the future development of Belfast. The Inner North West masterplan will be key to delivering the priorities and wider ambitions of the city. The Inner North West is currently underdeveloped and in need of investment. There are a lot of opportunity sites and a growing interest in the area.  There are also a number of large projects coming forward nearby such as the Ulster University and Former Royal Exchange. The masterplan aims to encourage, inform, influence and direct future proposals in the area.

The draft vision

“The city centre between Donegall Sq and Donegall St will be transformed to create a vibrant place to live, work, shop and relax across a series of mixed use neighbourhoods.  Ulster University’s campus, new investment, student housing and the existing character will provide a welcoming quarter embodied by creativity, innovation, culture, 24-hour activity and well-being in the heart of the city centre.”
